In an answer to MEP and EP Vice President Dimitrios Papadimoulis, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, says her and EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn’s recent visits clearly show the EU’s full and continued commitment to Macedonia and to the region as a whole. Papadimoulis filed on 4 May a written question regarding the situation in Macedonia and said the country was undermined by continued political instability and faced with deteriorating political and interethnic division. Also, he stated the climate of political rivalry was intensifying, there were efforts to silence media and the judiciary’s independence had been called into question, while the clashes and violence were escalating. As he also pointed out then, the situation worsens also Albanian PM Edi Rama’s nationalist and irredentist rhetoric and the policy of Kosovo, which are trying to divert public attention from the genuine problems of poverty and corruption. In the answer, Mogherini points out that the EU’s presence and commitment when it comes to the Western Balkan countries is of vital importance to the region’s peace, stability and economic recovery. As she adds, in that context, the EU has expressed its readiness to cooperate with Macedonia’s new government, which has already made positive steps towards stabilsiation of relations with its neighbours.
