Minorities in Albania issue Part of adopted Resolution

16022017 2

The resolution on Albania in the EP has been adopted. In it the MEPs insist on the fact that “efforts are needed to protect minority rights” in the country. The text also says that the legislation in that field should be applied. In that regard, it is especially pointed out that the EP calls for rights of ethnic Bulgarians living in the Prespa, Golo Brdo and Gora to be guaranteed in texts as well as in practice, an element which is a novelty in the resolutions in Albania, one which has been put upon an insistence from the Bulgarian MEPs. Before that, Bulgarian MEPs were saying that “100,000 Bulgarians live in Albania that do not have all rights of a recognised minority”, i.e. they wanted and managed to push through a thesis that the Macedonian minority in those three places is in fact a Bulgarian one. Albania recognises only Macedonians in Golo Brdo, Gora and Mala Prespa. In terms of respecting rights of minorities and asylum seekers, the EP calls on the relevant authorities in Albania to continue to improve the climate for inclusion and tolerance for all minorities.
